On The Other Side
On The Other Side is a work for piano and marimba commissioned by Parsons Dance for choreographer Chanel Da Silva. I first worked with Chanel in 2007 when we were students at Juilliard. Our aesthetics and performance styles just clicked and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Chanel and Parsons to premiere our work at The Joyce Theater in New York.
Chanel and I created the music and dance together over Zoom during the pandemic. At the start of our collaboration Chanel would choreograph a few movement phrases to music that I had previously composed. We went back and forth building phrases together and then expanding them to larger structures. The music of On The Other Side plays with momentum, repetition, and silence.
